This concept was proposed by neurologist Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor, who explains that our initial physiological reaction to an emotional trigger – a biochemical response in the body – naturally dissipates in about 90 seconds. If an emotion endures beyond that, it’s usually because our thoughts have locked it into a cycle.


How It Works


Dr. Taylor observed that when we encounter a stressful or emotional event, our body releases biochemical substances that trigger physical reactions such as increased heart rate or sweating. This initial response is purely physiological and lasts only about 90 seconds. However, if we continue to experience the emotion, it’s often because we keep it alive with our thoughts – for instance, by dwelling on what happened, replaying it, or analyzing alternate scenarios. This process locks the emotion in place, prolonging it and leading to longer-term stress or emotional reactions.
